Both subjects of the degree programmes are taught in the Dept of European Studies & Modern Languages. This facilitates integration. The programmes enable students to master one European language of their choice; French, German, Russian; Italian (Russian or Italian may be at beginner level); and acquire the knowledge and analytical skills to understand the social, political & economic changes currently affecting all European countries, including in Eastern Europe. Year 3 is spent abroad in a country in which the language is spoken. The final year is spent in Bath studying language and politics.

Assessment method
The programme is fully integrated, and both sides of the degree programmes carry equal weighting. Assessment is most commonly by coursework and examination. Every unit is assessed separately, i.e. there are no 'finals' examinations. Some units require you to do a mixture of essays or computer based assignments and examinations, others put greater emphasis on project work or examination alone. During the Year Abroad students write a Special Study as a preliminary to their final-year dissertation.
